PED Fasteners
PED fasteners for pressure equipment
Botnia bolt offers a broad range of specialized products for demanding industrial and construction applications, such as PED fasteners. PED fasteners are high- and low temperature fasteners designed for pressure-bearing parts, components and facilities. Regular fasteners cannot be used in the manufacture of these.
Pressure Equipment is Governed by the PED Directive (Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU)
The main purpose of the PED directive, known as the Pressure Equipment Directive or pressure vessels directive, is to ensure that pressure-bearing equipment does not pose risks to health, safety, or property during installation, use, and maintenance. Previously, national standards like the German AD 2000 were used.
PED Pressure Equipment Directive
- • Previously known as Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC from 1999
- • Main purpose is to ensure that pressure-bearing equipment does not pose risks to health, safety, or property during installation, use, and maintenance
- • PED defines essential safety requirements for the design, manufacture, and conformity assessment of pressure equipment with a maximum allowable operating pressure (PS) of more than 0.5 bar
- • The PED directive is bound by law, not a recommendation
Applications
PED fasteners are used in various pressure-bearing equipment, including gas and pressure systems:
- Tanks, cisterns
- Pipelines
- Process plants

Material properties of PED fasteners
Fasteners used in pressure equipment with a maximum allowable pressure above 0.5 bar must meet PED material requirements. The materials used in these fasteners must be sufficiently ductile and tough:
• Minimum 14% elongation after fracture
• Impact strength of 27 J at the lowest designated operating temperature
The manufacturer of pressure equipment is responsible for materials used in production, including fasteners. By using fasteners made of materials that comply with harmonized standards (standard SFS-EN 10269), adherence to essential safety requirements is ensured. The standard specifies steel types and outlines chemical and mechanical requirements for raw materials used in the manufacture of PED fasteners.
